We know that there are many threats to our privacy on social media websites. To protect our privacy on social media we have two options. We can stop using social media to reduce all privacy threats or we can use social media while being more careful and responsible. we have already discussed in detail about common threats to our privacy on social media, so in this topic i am not going to discuss about the threats, instead i will let you people know how to change your privacy settings on social media websites to maximize your privacy on social media.
If you want to learn more about threats on social media, i recommend you to read my previous post on emerging threats to your privacy on social media.
Different social media websites have different settings to protect user privacy. i am going to show you how to maximize your privacy on Facebook by changing the privacy settings. This is because Facebook is one of the most famous and widely used social media networking website and majority of people use Facebook.
Let’s start protecting your privacy on social media
Login to your Facebook account
After you login successfully, click on the arrow button adjacent to question mark icon at top right corner of the screen. From the drop down menu click on settings option.
In the settings page, click on Privacy option on the left side of the page.
In the privacy settings, edit the settings for “Who can see my stuff”. You can do this by click the edit button and then select Friends from the list of options. This will make your posts invisible to people who are not your friends.
You have provided your email to a lot of people, which means that many people know your email. And it also means that whoever has your email may search about you on Facebook. This is a privacy threat because your email which is public is leading unknown people to your social media account where you post about yourself and about your life. To make your account searchable through email only by your friends, click the edit button in front of “Who can look me up” and then click friends or friends of friends.
Similarly many knows your phone number and whoever has your phone number may search and find your account through your phone number. Since we don’t want anyone to find us through our phone number, we will set the option “Who can look up using the phone number you have provided” to “Friends” option.
To increase our privacy on social media, we need to make our self, less visible to unknown people as much as possible. You need to tell Facebook to make your account unsearchable or invisible on search engines. You may not want to do this if you are a celebrity or public figure who wants to be seen or reachable by everyone but if you just want to use social media for interacting with your friends, relatives and family members then it is very necessary to make yourself invisible on search engines. To do this, uncheck the box saying “Allow search engines outside Facebook to link to your profile”.
Now click on “Timeline and Tagging” option on the left side of screen.
Click the edit button in front of “Who can add things to my timeline”. From the drop down under “Who can post to your timeline”, select “Only Me”. This will not allow other people to post things without your permission.
Click the edit option in front of “Review posts friends tag you in before they appear on your Timeline?” Select “Enabled” option to review the posts you are tagged in. If it remains disabled, then anyone can add posts to your timeline, just by tagging you in the post.
The procedures shown above are enough to ensure that your privacy on social media is secure. Most of the people don’t bother to change these settings when they make sign up for Facebook, but I recommend every one of you to look at these privacy settings to protect your privacy on social media. if you have any suggestions and comments please let us know by commenting below.
